What we do

Assessment services for anyone building in a bushfire-prone area

BAL Assessments

Site-based Bushfire Attack Level assessments for homes, extensions and developments — the rating that determines how your build must respond to bushfire risk under AS 3959:2018, accepted for planning and building approval.

For homeowners · builders · surveyors

Bushfire Management Plans

Detailed, property-specific plans for subdivisions and complex sites under SPP 3.7 — hazard assessment, asset protection zones, access and water provisions, and the evidence decision-makers need to say yes.

For developers · planners · councils

Compliance Consulting

Construction-stage advice on meeting your BAL rating: which elements are affected, what the standard actually requires, and how to get certainty early — at design, before costs lock in.

For architects · designers · builders

How it works

From enquiry to a decision-ready report

  1. Enquire

Email the property address and what you're planning. We'll confirm scope, timing and a fixed quote.

  2. Site assessment

We assess vegetation, slope and separation on the ground — photographed, mapped and measured.

  3. Analysis

Classification and BAL determination run through our own geospatial pipeline — the same data, checked twice, every time.

  4. Report & support

A clear, compliant report for your application — and straight answers afterwards if your certifier or council has questions.

Why we're different

A consultancy that builds its own technology

Most consultancies buy their tools. We engineer ours. Every assessment — from the first enquiry to vegetation classification, BAL determination and the final report — runs on software we designed and built specifically for bushfire assessment work in Western Australia.

That matters because bushfire assessment is a domain where judgement and engineering have to meet. A bigger firm can hire a software team; what's hard to replicate is assessment expertise and engineering capability in the same hands, applied to every job.

Where this is heading: today an assessment is a report. We're building toward assessments you can see — interactive 3D models of a property with its fire risk made visible, so owners, builders and decision-makers understand the why, not just the rating.

  • Purpose-built geospatial pipeline

Vegetation, slope and separation analysed with the same rigour on every site — not a spreadsheet and a guess.

  • Standards, encoded

AS 3959 requirements modelled in software we maintain, so reports stay consistent with the standard as it evolves.

  • Construction product intelligence

A searchable library of Australian building products mapped to BAL requirements — currently in private beta with an AI assistant that answers compliance questions, with citations.

  • Field-to-report, one system

Site photos, mapping and measurements flow from the field straight into analysis — nothing retyped, nothing lost.

Our product tools are in private beta ahead of public launch. Register interest if you'd like early access.

About

Built in WA, for WA conditions

Banksia Bushfire is the trading name of Banksia GIS Pty Ltd, a Western Australian consultancy founded on a simple idea: bushfire assessment deserves the same engineering rigour as the risks it measures.

It's run by a practising bushfire consultant accredited under FPA Australia's Bushfire Planning and Design (BPAD) scheme (accreditation no. 59401), who also builds the software behind every assessment — which is why the technology isn't off-the-shelf, and why an assessment from us comes with answers, not just a rating.

Rigour

Every input measured, every determination traceable to the standard.

Clarity

Reports written for the people who have to act on them.

Ownership

Our stack, our data, our responsibility — end to end.
